Arcology: Nightfall

Description

This is the second in a sequence of images depicting different stages in the Future History of an “Arcology” – a city/habitat contained inside a single immense structure.

What rises must one day fall. While the Arcology stood as a symbol of greatness, it was not without enemies who lurked in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to strike. Here, the city is about to come under devastating attack.

Heavily armed fighter-bombers streak in low over the coastline on final approach for their first attack run. In the distance, the Arcology slumbers peacefully, unaware of the imminent threat.

This is an exterior view of the same Arcology seen in my piece: “Arcology: Daybreak. The horizontal slice through the dome’s equator is the very same gap shown in that other image. The elliptical opening is the main port for airships and transport to and from the outside world.

This and other images in the sequence were originally created for the book “Concept Design II”, about 6 years ago now…

The entire scene was created in Lightwave 3D, with textures painted in Photoshop. The 3D render was modified in Photoshop to produce the final image.

Extremely creative work going on here.  The Arcology is interesting with very dramatic detail.  Speaking of dramatic, the composition of the scene itself is great, really evoking tension.  I gotta say even though the Arcology is the main subject of the piece, those fighter-bombers are very creative work.  Not sure if your design lineages are the same, but I imagine elements in the fighter-bomber design from old 1960's-70's era science fiction art mixed with some 1980s-1990s anime mecha influences.  Great scene overall.
