Arcology: The Fall by steve-burg Arcology: The Fall by steve-burg
This is the third in a sequence of images depicting different stages in the Future History of an “Arcology” – a city/habitat contained inside a single immense structure.

This image picks up where "Arcology: Nightfall" [link] left off.

Fighter-bombers have breached the outer shell of the Arcology and launched a devastating attack from within. The once proud mega-city and its untold millions of inhabitants will not survive this night...

This and other images in the sequence were originally created for the book “Concept Design II”, about 6 years ago now…

This is a different version than the image printed in the book; it is seen here for the first time :)

The entire scene was created in Lightwave 3D, with textures painted in Photoshop. The 3D render was modified in Photoshop to produce the final image.

Love that Blade Runner influence, the Tyrell Piramid. Great structure design and it looks fantastic in the red lights provided by the fires.

This is one of the coolest pieces of sci fi art I've ever seen - reminds me of many mental visualizations I've had but never been able to put down onto paper, only into music. Thanks for creating this so I could see it!!

So I guess we now know why they were willing to live under "crushing anvil circumstances". The attack craft come off very "wraith-like" in this view, when seen mostly as silhouettes . Reminds me a bit of B'5's Shadows, on a gut visual level.

Hmmm - someone else thought they looked like Minbari...
I imagine this is on earth, some time after a very extreme catastrophe has rendered the environment inhospitable. The big dome is kind of the last decent place of refuge, and the attacking planes are from another group lacking the resources to set themselves up like this and the city can not support everyone & so must decline many people who want to come in. But basically, they are all human - just very far in the future :D

Good question! Partly, I'm actually a bit blocked at the moment. But that's only part of it, I'm not worried because it happens all the time ;)

I'm actually going back and finding pieces that were not used in the book. So some of these are variations that got edited out. I have also found a few that I'm actually going to put a lot of work into (now) because they got axed before I made much progress. So they'll be 50/50 - old/new :D

It's kind of bad - I completely forget about this stuff - and then I find it and it's a case of "damn, that's a lot of work that's never been seen!"

It's definitely a subject that's going to appear :D! I want to do a giant space habitat under attack - or maybe it's already too late to save it and it's begining to break apart in huge chunks :D !

I always liked the concept of the enclosed city in "Logan's Run", and the vision of the ruins of Washington D.C. overgrown by forests. I wouldn't mind seeing ideas like that return to sci-fi movies - I think we're in "dry spell" at the moment ;)

The appearance of buildings reminiscent of the best times of Syd Mead.
With a tone "Blade Runner" in its construction, which recalls the building of the corporation that created the androids in the movie.
It is gratifying to see that even great artists have influences visible. Nonetheless, its artistic contribution is always first class.
the light is wonderful. full of depth ... :)

Syd Mead practically created the role of "concept artist". He is the true "Maestro" - he showed the path, and we now follow :)

Syd Mead is master of technique (no one paints gouache as well as he does), master of design, and master of fantastic vision.
True Master!

Believe it or not - I've never played Sim City! Arcology is a futurist concept that developed (I believe)in the 1960s, where an entire city exists in a single structure as opposed to being all spread out. I guess it would be like a shopping mall on steroids, or a really gigantic hotel where people work as well as live.

Oh I had heard of it before, much like the Dyson Sphere, just never seen it applied until Sim-City. I could be mistaken, but I think it goes back to pre WWII. Think Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ish.

That's very possible. Some of the most advanced concepts for future cities came during the Great Depression. I guess even in those terrible times, people had dreams of a bright future. And they built things like Hoover Dam and the Empire State building - remarkable! :)

I really like this one Steve, amazing work :) Very dramatic and awesome scale. Steve, do you have a custom brush that you use for the city window lights? How do you do that? If it is a brush, do you think you could make it available for download? I'm in need of that effect desperately.

There isn't really a brush - although I did paint the texture in Photoshop. Basically, it's just a bunch of white rectangles separated by black lines, with some random color multiplied on top to break up the windows. This was applied to the 3D model as a texture. If I had to do this in 2D, I would take a similar texture and distort it to match the perspective of the image.
You can also check out some of the textures at [link] - in the category "Buildings/High Rise/Night" - they're pretty good reference.

BTW I would love to put some of the elaborate 3D illustrations in Extreme Detail if you feel they're appropriate :)

sir your art is truly amazing! i would like to know how to create environments like this. it's just that when i start to draw environments nothing pops out in my mind.. i feel more comfortable with characters...

Thanks :) !

It's totally fine to be more comfortable with characters - I'm almost the opposite - characters are where I feel like I really need to make some improvements :)!

I always feel like there's a strong connection between characters and their environment. You can ask yourself "where would this character live, what is their world like?" Or approaching the question from the other side, it might be "what would the characters who live in a place like this look like?"

It's also a great inspiration to look at reference photos, either of landscapes or man-made environments :)
