This is a piece of production artwork. It was done during a period when I worked for Electronic Arts, for a proposed game that never happened. This was 4 or 5 years ago, I believe...
It's a 3D scene made from preexisting elements that I arranged to achieve this specific angle. Like a lot of artists who use 3D, I have a huge collection of assets that can be thrown together to quickly visualize a concept. Typically, a view such as this is produced in about 1 day.
Credits: The sky is based on a photo taken out the office window by our producer, and the trash heaps are from the EA internal asset archive (which is not accessible unless you work there). Both were heavily altered to match the overall scene. The birds - I have several "bird brushes" that I've painted as I also do with figures
The concept here is that due to overpopulation and scarcity of land, large urban habitats (called arcologies) are constructed on enormous semi-submersible platforms (think giant oil rigs). This is a view underneath one of these platforms, with more of the city visible in the distance.
I was tempted to try and rework this and add a lot of little flourishes to sweeten the illustration, but then I thought "No, this is what it is - a quick concept!". So for better or worse, I'm posting it in its unaltered state
Hey I have to do a project for my college chem class, we have to make a comic book and I was wondering if you would allow me to use this image, and if you would like I will credit you, thanks
I so much believe in the potential of the game medium. But you are right, there is a failure to expand the range and reach a broader audience. Story is one important aspect - and more variety of activities is really needed (aside from shooting non-stop).
I hope one day it happens - there is tremendous potential there for a very powerful experience different from other forms of entertainment.
As a non-gamer this would probably just the game I would have played and enjoyed.
