Evacuate the Colony

Description

This 3D illustration was produced for the book "Concept Design II". It is a wide view of the main landing field of a large refinery complex, on a planet in another star system.

A full-scale evacuation is in progress, orchestrated by the colonial military forces. Faintly visible in the distance, huge refinery towers rise above the icy plateau. Mammoth ore transport ships taxi across the field, glowing crimson with the last light of day. Soldiers and ground crews struggle against a gathering storm as twilight descends.

The planet can't support human life, hence the heavily plated environment suits. The "snow" is most likely methane sleet, with temperature far colder than anywhere on earth. It's a real hell-hole of a forsaken world :D

The other images in this sequence are "Origin: Unknown" [link] "Sphinx" [link] and "The Coming Storm" [link]

This image is a still derived from elements originally created to make an animated scene (I've posted some still frames of this as well, in the piece titled: "Airlift: Frame Grabs").

All the 3D elements were modeled and rendered in Lightwave 3D, with textures painted in Photoshop. The various render passes were then combined in Photoshop, and some painting was done to blend everything together.

There is sense of isolation and loneliness to this, as well as urgency.  Maybe because each person is in such a heavy environment suit.  I love these "space-scapes", as I call them.  Of the hundreds I've seen on deviant art, this one has emerged as my favorite.  The "snow", the lights of the refinery and equipment illuminating the scene.  And such an unusual design for the giant ship dominating the scene.  I love this.
