Freight Loader by steve-burg Freight Loader by steve-burg
This is a test render of the vehicle shown in "The Coming Storm" [link]

It's an unfinished scene, nothing too amazing - but the vehicle is a bit easier to see without the blowing snow added in the finished painting :)

At this stage, the vehicle was nearly complete, but still had some "temp" textures and materials. The setting also changed quite a bit - at this point, the vehicle was parked on a large landing platform situated on top of a tall industrial structure - similar to an offshore oil platform.

The vehicle and platform were modeled and rendered in Lightwave 3D, with a mix of procedural textures and image maps painted in Photoshop. The suited figures were from a separate render test, and were pasted in to previsualize how the figures would look next to the vehicle ;)

Very interesting design. Background add to the overal dramatism of the scene.

Looks damn awesome. all the colors, design, composition.. super.
how did you achieve such blurry/paintery/soft render effect?

The soft look is from a little bit of Photoshop tweaking. I always feel like the straight rendered image is just a little bit too crisp, so I do a little bit of retouching to soften the edges and adjust the contrast. It looks very similar, but feels more natural I think.

The impression is that it would be very articulate and could change it’s silhouette quite a bit, and there’s a lot of hydraulics under the various sections. Looks like it could have came from the same factory that produces military ‘Mechs’. ; )

Yes indeed - this vehicle can change its shape quite a bit :)
There's definitely a "mech" flavor to it as well - I started out aiming for a construction vehicle style, but by the end it had taken on much more of a sci-fi mech appearance :D

Steve you're vehicles are sooo cool - always interesting looking and at the same time realistic - i love looking at em ;) Does the legroom of the driver continue down underneath the cab a bit? it looks like you might have to squeeze in to fit if you compare it to the people in the suits

The guys in the suits might not be in the right scale (they are composited in). The driver's legroom does f=go below the window, yes. Probably, this isn't completely "occupant friendly" but it was mainly designed as the external shape. I think the guy fits, but he might not be in a comfortable position :)

I know the "build it in your mind" phenomenon - it's kind of great when it happens almost spontaneously.

If you want to try and model it - or do your own take on it, by all means give it a go :D
