This is a painting of the house where I grew up, in New Jersey. The painting was a Christmas gift given to my parents not long after my dad retired and my parents moved to California. I resisted the urge to rearrange anything for the sake of composition, and painted it exactly as it looked on a typical day in October, with the fall colors.

There are many wonderful memories rolled up in this simple painting (at least for me) :)

I've owned my current house for 15 years, but in many ways, I will probably always think of this place - and those times - as my true home.

I'm being a bit sentimental, but what can I say? Today (as I post this) is my birthday :D

Acrylics - 9" x 14"

Amazing painting! You've inspired me to do a smiliar one of my own childhood home! :)

I would love to see more traditional oil/acrylic paintings from you! I love digital artworks, but there is just a certain kind of "personality" to traditional. :)

I moved from NJ.
Your house "says" home.

Strange as it may seem, the first reference that comes to my mind (considering the dimensions of your image) is Canaletto and his uber-detailed views of Venice.
I'm so grateful to my friend :iconarcass: who pointed me to your amazing work.

I always worked at a small size because it was faster - the pressures of commercial art stay with us! :D
I'm glad [link] pointed you my way!

No photo - just colored goop smeared on cardboard using sticks tipped in animal fur :XD:
(But I did look at photographs as reference to get the details just right)

Nice, Steve. I can definitely picture how many beautiful memories you must have from your childhood. Living in LA and coming from the French countryside, I feel the same. Although, I have to say, eventually, every place I lived in had things I hated and things I loved and missed afterward. Isn't it the nature and beauty of this life after all? Experiencing the good, the less good, and the beautiful memories :)

That's absolutely true!
Even in desolation, I find great beauty. Although I do miss living in a forested area with four seasons! :D

i love this! pieces like this or images of artists studios are among my favorites to see. it paints an interesting portrait of an artist by describing their "negative space" so to speak. thanks for sharing steve! hope ur havin a swell b-day.

Thanks - I'm glad you like it! At the moment, my "studio" really fits the bill of "negative" space! My computer's sitting on a folding table in a room full of boxes :D But what's in the painting is what I carry in my mind - hence the title.

You even had some woods in the backyard. I had a similar situation growing up, but they chopped em all down and put in some condos.

It was actually a whole forest! And it's still there - thank goodness.
Sad world if all forests are cut down and replaced with condos...
Better to destroy ugly condos and replace with forest! :D

New Jersey has such a strange reputation... Growing up there, I remember many beautiful places... certainly it's much nicer than southern California where I live now (bums, slums, smog, garbage and TRAFFIC)

Thats one beautiful house!! love the colour of the trees! You must have had lots of adventures in those grounds, Im lucky enough to stay in a flat overlooking a fast flowing part of a river, Its practically in my garden, across the river the trees in October are like in your painting. The trees are always full of crows and I can usually watch the Heron fishing in the morning... Hopefully the people staying in your house will build some of the fond memories that you have taken with you! Nice one bud :)

I definitely miss living in an area with a lot of nature, and seasons. I've lived in the Los Angeles area all my adult life - just because that's where I've worked. One day I hope to leave it and find someplace a bit more like what I experienced growing up

It would seem that oil-paint-looking works like this have become increasingly rare in this day and age. My great-grandmother, great-aunt, grandmother, and mother were all excellent at oil painting and I thus carry a special nostalgia for such a style. You have captured the spirit of the genre perfectly and I daresay this is among the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Oh, and a belated happy birthday to you. ;)

Thanks for the birthday wishes :)
And thank you very much for your generous compliment.

I agree it seems that traditional painting is less prevalent than it once was. But it's difficult to imagine it will disappear. Digital art is pretty good for the requirements of commercial art, but I tend to look at it as "disposable" somehow. There is nothing like an actual painting.

The first thing that hit me with this was that the style of the house and especially the shape of the landscape is very realistic rather than a vanilla flat plot. Very well done.

i wonder if all artists are nostalgic. i am very, very nostalgic. that's weird. maybe that's why we draw. to leave something behind, to remind people what and who we were. deep shit lol.

I'm quite nostalgic, and it's a very odd dynamic between the stuff I remember and what usually shows up in my art. There's a strong connection, but it's not at all obvious! :D
I tend to cherish the memories of where I grew up, and in my art I tend to express what was forming in my imagination in those days :)

the mental library thing. yeah, i think we all have our own little movies playing in our heads. there's always that thing i see and say "oh... im gonna draw that one day" that's what's awesome about art... one can bring memories, dreams and even better, sci fi conceptualizations to real life. that's why, to me, being an artist is the best thing man can be. lol well, that and being Hugh Hefner. ;p
