*Jaw dropped* Gorgeous organic design!!! If "organic" is the right choice of word for it! How long did this took you? And is there some design development behind it or you just built it up as you went along in the final image? I hope I can develop my skills up to your level someday!
Beautiful, Steve. Elements of Jim Burns and Gieger. Very neat sense of light and space....and the overall structure somehow reminds me of a cathedral. So much is "painted" and how much is "composited elements that are then tweaked"? How long does a work like this take you?
Something like this can take a long time, unless there's a killer deadline (there was). This image is the background for a painting that featured a character as the main element - so I couldn't devote too much time to the environment. But still, I wanted to do certain things with it. I would say it took about 1 1/2 days. That's where Photoshop comes to the rescue.
The ability to clone and repeat textures, shapes and elements greatly speeds up what would otherwise be a very time consuming process. It's also a great benefit to be able to blend between layers at a moment's notice. A few relatively simple shapes, repeated and overlaid with layers of texture and such can quickly produce the feeling of great complexity. I do this a lot, and it accounts for the speed that is possible! :
Since I know what I'm looking for, I can still see my very first under-painting in areas. It was just black and white, simple vertical shapes - but it's the foundation and it's still a part of the image...
