Launch by steve-burg Launch by steve-burg
A slight reworking of a piece did about 2 years ago. I removed some elements from the foreground, and spruced up the backdrop. This is entirely painted in Photoshop...

*Jaw dropped* Gorgeous organic design!!! If "organic" is the right choice of word for it! How long did this took you? And is there some design development behind it or you just built it up as you went along in the final image? I hope I can develop my skills up to your level someday! :)

Beautiful, Steve. Elements of Jim Burns and Gieger. Very neat sense of light and space....and the overall structure somehow reminds me of a cathedral. So much is "painted" and how much is "composited elements that are then tweaked"? How long does a work like this take you?

Something like this can take a long time, unless there's a killer deadline (there was). This image is the background for a painting that featured a character as the main element - so I couldn't devote too much time to the environment. But still, I wanted to do certain things with it. I would say it took about 1 1/2 days. That's where Photoshop comes to the rescue.

The ability to clone and repeat textures, shapes and elements greatly speeds up what would otherwise be a very time consuming process. It's also a great benefit to be able to blend between layers at a moment's notice. A few relatively simple shapes, repeated and overlaid with layers of texture and such can quickly produce the feeling of great complexity. I do this a lot, and it accounts for the speed that is possible! :

Since I know what I'm looking for, I can still see my very first under-painting in areas. It was just black and white, simple vertical shapes - but it's the foundation and it's still a part of the image...

That's true - and also having a liftoff in the middle of a city would cause some serious problems - so it doesn't actually make much sense! :D

Wonderfully evocative and moody. Perfect book cover--it draws you into wanting to know more about the story, and it stands alone beautifully.

Wow, beautiful. The spherical shape in the foreground looks warmer where it's nearer to the rocket fire, it might be neat to see some bright yellow highlights on that surface too.

I can't help but wonder how the folks that would live there would pass the time of day.
