Snowbound by steve-burg Snowbound by steve-burg
Nothing groundbreaking, this is just a quick 3D setup using some assets from my "stock library". There is a bit of retouching done in Photoshop...

It is further proof that I have a fixation with ice, crashed spaceships, trucks with giant wheels, stormy skies and back-lighting! :D

Software: Lightwave 3D, Modo, Photoshop

Hey, I'd love to have this as my desktop wallpaper, it is epically awesome and provides great escapism when I get too bogged down in work! Or pretty much every time I minimise InDesign :D Is there anywhere you have posted it at a 1920x1200 or higher resolution? Thanks very much!

Kinda how I imagine the Chinese ship in 2010: Odyssey Two when it touches down on Europa to get more propellant.

That's an interesting notion! I always liked that part of the book (2010) - especially when the huge creature broke through the ice, attracted by the lights as they were trying to refuel.

I am working in game development these days. I worked in movies for a long time, but moved on to this about 7-8 years ago. "Prometheus" was definitely worth making an exception for - "Alien" was what inspired me to become a designer. I don't know if I'll work on a movie again or not. I have no plans to do so, but... Never say never, I guess! :)

and nothing wrong with those fixations i'd say ^^

This is a most impressive image. I think I share a few of your fixations, though I cannot express them so masterfully as you do :D Ice, crashed ship, exploration – what else do you need in life?

Make it sound like a bad thing! This is brilliant! Simple, sinister and a delight!

Crashed ships, big-wheeled trucks, icy fields and stormy skies you said? That's what I like, too. =3

You are a hardcore LW user - I'd like to know about your experience with Modo... And Brilliant image as always.
steve-burg Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2012  Professional Filmographer
Thanks! :)

I have a long history with Lightwave, and I'm comfortable using it. But I'm also excited about Modo. I think it is moving toward being a full-featured 3D app, much more than the humble beginnings as a modeling -only software. The new version has particles, dynamics, and skeletal deformation - so there's not too much it can't do. The renderer is extremely nice, and it is excellent for making UV's and baking the various textures. Also, the rendering is very fast.

BTW*** I have been paying close attention to the rather intense struggle on the topic of reorganizing the 3D art category on DA. I don't feel very hopeful about how things seem to be shaping up there - actually "destroyed" might be a more accurate description LOL! The way I use 3D is similar to how I do my commercial work, where it's mixed in with other elements and the main purpose is to illustrate an original design or visual idea. I received some very negative feedback when I expressed this opinion, and the feeling seemed to be that what I produce is not art (or that's what I got out of the remarks).

If I did use Poser with all premade content, then it would be pure art (so I was told). Design and modeling etc. is not 3D art, it is merely a craft, the manufacture of objects. I can't say I agree with this point of view, although it seems very widespread. I was surprised by how low an opinion people seem to have of 3D illustrations where the content is created by the artist. It was discouraging to say the least. So... I don't know if there is really a place for the kind of artwork I do, and this came as kind of a shock! I'm curious what your thoughts are, because I haven't been here on DA for that long (about 18 months) and it seems like this issue has a very long history.

This is just incredible! Love the shape and design of the ship and how you have made if feel so lifeless after the crash. The depth of field is awesome as well as your composition and lighting. Love how the small rover really accentuates the size of the larger craft! Brilliant work! :iconbwavoplz:

Great work. I like how the comparatively tiny lights of the large land vehicle add to the sense of isolation and scale. I notice you used both Modo and Lightwave. Did you model in Modo and render in LW, or were the models simply created in the two apps at different times?

Looks like this to me:

"This is the third day after the crash, and the Carrierīs water supplies are dropping down really fast. I wonder if all snow outside could be as toxic as they tell, but the deal was to send one of us to search any kind of liquid source that wouldnīt kill by poisoning... It may sound pessimistic, but I rather disagree of my collegues: itīs way more easier to accidentally drop the Snowbound Tank onto a cliff, losing our only way of locomotion left and slowly kill the rest of us of dehidratation."
