The Long Ascent by steve-burg The Long Ascent by steve-burg
This is a 3D render that I modified in Photoshop. The figures were painted on a much larger scale, then reduced and placed in the landscape.

I haven't the slightest idea what this is, but it does not look like a natural formation. I think it's a structure - its origin and purpose unknown.

The image was originally created for a book project, and I added the figures much later. A lot of material didn't make it into the book - but it might find its way here... :)

the way the structure is oriented makes me want to tilt my head, but, that would of course mean that the people are standing at an angle to the axis of gravitation
that confuses me...

It DOES look like a natural formation if you've ever seen a picture of the Giant's Causeway ;)

This reminds me of a story which im folding together. The humans (us, but in the DISTANT future), build a massive planet structure to preserve human kind. The new humans evolve similar to what we did (no religious influence intended). The continents are very similar to ours, but as the humans become more advanced, they do as we do and explore in space and in the ground. Eventually they dig so far that they find collosal structures and workers cities (long abandoned), which hold up and keep their planet in continual harmony with itself. I imagine this is a structure that these people (the hikers) find, and assume its just a natural occurance, and explore it as we might. Perhaps the light is coming from an artificial crevice in the continents to vent out the machines. Anyway, sorry for the long explanation - the artwork is magnificent!

cool the structures remind me somehow of Star Trek the motion Picture (first Star Trek movie) but thats just because they are symetrical shapes i guess ^^

Well, I've always loved the visuals in Star Trek the Motion Picture. I think the whole concept of the V'ger entity was incredible.

BTW you've suggested to me something else I can post :)

Lovecraft really defined this entire genre - I read "At the Mountains of Madness" many years ago and it's had a lasting impact. Humans are basically spectators to these colossal inhuman intelligences. I love that stuff :)

I worked on 2 books that were compilations of original art - "Concept Design" and "Concept Design 2". I'm pretty sure an earlier version of this made it into one of them - but I can't remember for sure, or which one...
