Titan AE - Drej Fortress by steve-burg Titan AE - Drej Fortress by steve-burg
A blast from the ancient past... In looking through my archive, I came across this and decided to post it.

This is the key concept for the main ships of the bad guys, the Drej...

This was an acrylic painting, about 12" x 18" on Strathmore cold-press illustration board. "Titan AE" was a fun project - and working in animation was a nice change of pace from the live action film work...

This is also one of the few traditional art pieces I have in digital format :D

What a shame that such a great movie like Titan A.E. was so criticized.

This ship looks cool, but the Stingers look even cooler! (They're a bit tricky to draw, though; I sketch in my free time)

Wow! Awesome art! A piece of my childhood right there! I used to sketch Titan AE fanart all the time when I was a kid, and I must have watched my VHS copy more then 50 times ...

I gotta read up on the making of this movie. Thoose cut parts with the Drej civilization seems really interesting. Makes me wonder what else was cut ...

But there is a different, between the aliens.
The Drej are made of pure energy. The other Aliens use extremely advanced bio-technology.

At least, both look really similar. :)

Thanks! That was a fun project - I enjoyed working on an animated film, there was a lot of terrific art done (and a lot that never made it into the final movie) - a really amazing group of artists :D

Despite what the movie critics said or wrote, I loved that movie (I still do :D ). Iīm probably one of the biggest sci-fi/aliens vs. mankind/lots of spaceship fights/tons of explosions/race for the survival of humanity fan on this planet.
Itīs a pity though that we didnīt find out more about the Drej alien race. Making them act like independent characters and talk would be interesting. Anyway, cool picture - it made me wish for a sequel :D

Sweeet! I loved this movie a lot, one of my favorite sci-fi movies in terms of alien races and what-not. I still wished there was more involved for the ships, worlds and races, since we don't really see much of the alien cultures besides bits and pieces.

I agree - it's sometimes kind of a letdown to see how really cool ideas are barely touched on in the final movie, game, whatever. There was a whole concept about the Drej civilization (which I can't remember in much detail, unfortunately). And some of the other civilizations too. Ah well, I can't complain - it was a lot of fun to work on. But it's always nice when the ideas are still there in the final result of all that work everyone does! :D

I am sure the ideas were great ones, and it would shed some light to the mysteries that arose with the Drej and the other races. Though I guess now it's left to speculation and fandom to decide what they make of it, much like myself. But its the ideas that are still in the final result that counts.

You certainly seem to have got around back in the day! It's so cool to discover the different projects you've been a part of that I know from my memory. I always had a soft spot for Titan AE, even if it wasn't as strong a film as it could have been it's still one of my favorite animated movies, even if just for the great scifi visuals.
