Wreckage In The Canyon by steve-burg Wreckage In The Canyon by steve-burg
This is another 3D scene rendered and then repainted in Photoshop. It is also from the canceled "Tiberium" project.

In this illustration, a group of soldiers find their path blocked by the wreckage of a large air cargo ship that has shifted following an earthquake.

Incidentally, the design of the wreck is the same type of airship as seen in another image posted in the gallery (Dropship Arrival: Sky Dock).

There are a lot of skilled artists, but someone like Berkey - who had such a strong individual vision - is very very rare. Fortunately, he was also very prolific :)!

Believe me, I am always looking for that level of stuff too. I think it's more his artistic vision - probably today he would paint digitally. But he would still be Berkey, just with a different brush :)

I think epic is a good adjective for all these game renderings, the massive scales and the general air of deterioration everywhere, fantastic work all around.....you know, I'm not a huge gamer but i think this would have been a cool game....damn those bean counters anyway! :shakefist:

I am not a huge gamer myself - but I have become really sucked into a few of them. It's an amazing medium, with a lot of potential to evolve further. The last game I really got completely blown away by was "Mass Effect 2". Damn, that's really a great thing, and amazing creation :)!!!

Cool vehicles. Kinda reminds me of what I WISHED the D.A. Landmaster had looked like. I love the sense of scale here, with the HUGE rusting mechanical spindle thing. Nothing says "downfall" like a huge, rusting spindle, my Momma used to say.

Huge rusting spindle equals downfall - yes - that's it :D!!!

Your Momma is a genius :)

The trucks were fun, they had flexing wheel "thingies" (a technical term) and kind of seemed to me like turtles. Go ahead, laugh - but it's true ;)!

Were they all your design? Do you have any other views of them that you can share?

I designed all the main vehicles. The design process was pretty done much in 3D, once I had a napkin sketch figured out.

I have all the study models, and can post some additional views of the trucks if you like.

And other things as well :)

I started just making basic shapes for perspective guides. From there, it grew. But if you start playing with 3D, it gets easier.

Plus, everything I do needs a lot of Photoshop :D!

I can use (a bit) of photoshop, since I'm still using gimp, but I suck at 3D art !! (I never tried in fact :D)

I bet if you tried it you would find a way to use 3D that you are comfortable with. It's just getting past the frustration in the beginning. That I remember was not fun :)

But if you do some tutorials, one day you suddenly realize "I can do it!"

haha hello! Indeed I am, been putting in a lot of time these days, keeps the sane train on the tracks if you get my meaning.

Yeah I figured the reason would have been expenses. Most game companies are trigger shy with new intellectual properties bewcause of the lack of a measure of success to use as a template for a budget for the project. But even with a really good idea, low projected sales can scare the big wigs pretty good lol. It's a shame, coulda been the next Fallout or Mass Effect... Plus, when you get to work on something there's an attachment there. Cancellation must feel like a 2 ton anvil to the solar plexus followed by repeat nightmares of anvils. WOw what suckage.

What you describe - I think these are the unfortunate realities of today. We are merely the servants of the bean counters and the marketing gurus.

It is out of balance. I believe now we are witnessing a "correction" - most obvious in the failure of the old tricks to reignite the economic engine. Like a tube of toothpaste that has been completely squeezed, and now it's empty :D!

Interesting times... :)
