Ziggurat - 3D matte painting by steve-burg Ziggurat - 3D matte painting by steve-burg
This is another experiment in 3D matte painting.

The video can be seen here: [link]

The scene was made by camera mapping 3 separate paintings onto low-polygon geometry. There is a painting for the environment, another for the ship, and a third for the weird pyramids in the background. Each painting was projected from a separate camera to make the final scene.

I still want to fine tune this... but I was itching to post something! :D

Found it with some youtube search ^^, really cool i am pretty curious how you did the ground, it's clearly not a 3D model with 3D rock, but it doesn't look flat, is this a displacement map on Lightwave ?
For your camera projection did you used a plug-ins ?

Very cool. And the projection on the front ship holds really well in the video, considering the range of motion of the camera move.

Thanks. Yes, I was trying to see just how much I could move the camera without breaking the shot

Do you mean what software was used to compile the animation into a video format? If so, I just used Adobe Premiere for that.

this is really great. there is a certain retro vibe to this, in spite of the fact it's obviously set in the future.
so looking forward to seeing what you did for PROMETHEUS this coming June. great job!

I am very curious about "Prometheus" - I think it continued to change once they went overseas to film it, so I'll be interested to see what finally came of it.

As far as the retro feel - I think I'm consciously trying to get back in tune with some of the stuff that inspired me way back when. There was something really cool about sci-fi back in the 1970s and 1980s (not just movies, but in books and artwork as well). Maybe something that has been misplaced somewhere, and deserves rediscovering? Who knows... :)

I think the element which has been sadly lost is the aspiration and courage to envision on the grand scale - to visualize and depict achievement, to boldly dare a magnificent future for mankind. The nihilism that has swamped Sci Fi culture (well, more than just Sci Fi culture, actually) must surely be a mere wave - an affectation that can and will pass, all it takes is integrity and courage.

I think you may be the first person to pick up on that. You're exactly on target - actually, I was very inspired by the original script for Alien, which had pyramidal structures on the planet. BTW I took considerable care not to stray too close to Prometheus, I must be respectful of NDAs :D

will certainly give very good results ... (already doing)
It is a technique that can offer much to someone who holds the domain of painting, as you do ..
watch, to see his next work in this regard. :)

very cool, ... extremely small crit; i would apply a small blur to the rocks right in the foreground, that way the cameras focus is strictly on the ship

The foreground is quite noisy/busy. I might try a different painting, one that is less eye-catching. The real challenge is to find the right textures - at high enough resolution - to be able to make an image that holds up! :)
