LV426 Street by steve-burg LV426 Street by steve-burg
This is a little homage to one of my favorite movies: "Aliens" (1986)

It's a 3D scene that I started a very long time ago as an exercise to improve my modeling and texturing skills. It's occasionally been revisited over a period of several years for little tweaks and lighting changes.

Like many 3D scenes - it was never really finished, it's simply been abandoned :)

This is probably the "signature shot" of this environment - looking down the long street...

The designs and imagery are the copyright of 2oth Century Fox, of course.

Do you have a version of this at cgtextures by any chance? I remember seeing a showcase for an "Aliens" piece there some time ago and thinking this was amazing... now I finally get a chance to comment on it/favourite it!
Very awesome, and I could totally recognize where it came from right away. Only one of the best movies of all time!
Really, truly fantastic job with this! You have some amazing talent.

Wow! I went to look at that - and that's actually not mine

I think it is an "in-game" environment made to run in real-time. It looks great! My version is definitely not real-time capable (although I did do a test where I imported some low polygon versions of the buildings into the Unreal 3 UDK.)

I didn't realize CG textures had a showcase - and here I've been a subscriber for 3 years! I should try and submit something over there - I certainly make use of their textures :D

Wow, Steve - this series is incredible. I'd have taken it for concept art from production if it weren't CG (and Aliens wasn't from so long ago). The renders do have a nice painterly feel to them. The only thing that feels like its missing is some visible drizzle. And while this may have been one of the few established properties that Cameron has directed/written, few sequels kicked as much ass :) I still remember walking out of this film and being in awe for the better part of the week.

The concept art they did was all pure B&W drawings. These days a lot of concept work is very polished and can look like a photograph or gallery painting!

Franky, I still love the drawing approach. It was very centered on the form and idea of a thing, and the fundamental design process. Today there are many concept images that are drowning in technique, but who knows about the actual architecture? I often have to mentally deconstruct an image and strip away all the polish to see what the actual thing is supposed to be.

But I do love the digital paintings - don't get me wrong :)!

I love the detail of the bar, and the lights over the containers doors.

Those details are part of the scene in the movie - but I noticed that the scene "came to life" when that sign went in. And the little light sources really help with sense of scale. It was fun adding in all that stuff :)

I'm glad you recognize it! I just now realized that I'd basically posted what amounts to "fan art" without actually naming the source (oops!)

Yep - it's the colony from "Aliens" - which I've always admired (as well as the film) :)

Now you know this is a scene inspired by the movie "Aliens"? I do sometimes learn quite a bit from duplicating something. I thank you (although I can take no credit for the design in this case - same as with the 2001 spaceship).

It was a project to teach myself to be a better 3D artist - and also fun :)

ALIENS recognition course.
I think a good technique, be inspired by a good job. I think this way, one can be more versatile. Me too, I usually make custom versions of work that I like. It's a good underwriting year. Highly recommended.
Very good job. as usual. :)

Thanks :)

I think it is like making a "Master Study" - you learn by duplicating something as closely as possible :)
